Lavish Lovers

Mary of Bethany, whose love for Jesus in Luke’s Gospel inspires her to ‘waste’ time sitting at his feet listening to him, is inspired by that same extravagant love in today’s haunting Gospel as she lavishly ‘wastes’ genuine aromatic nard to anoint Jesus’ feet.

Interesting to note that Jesus links her gesture of extravagant, excessive love with his upcoming Passion.  Theologian Hans Urs von Baltahsar caught this point: ‘Wastefulness is the original Christian attitude …the entire Passion occurs under the sign of this complete self-wasting of God’s love for the world’

This was a truly sacrificial act. Some scholars believe that this was probably Mary’s treasured oil to be used at her own funeral. In pouring it out on Jesus she was uniting her death with His!! This was a profound revelation that the disciples had not yet comprehended.

    Mark 14:7-9

7For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you will not always have Me.(A)

8She has done what she could; she came beforehand to anoint My body for the burial.

9And surely I tell you, wherever the good news (the Gospel) is proclaimed in the entire world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.

    Romans 6:4-5
4We were buried therefore with Him by the baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious [power] of the Father, so we too might [habitually] live and behave in newness of life.

5For if we have become one with Him by sharing a death like His, we shall also be [one with Him in sharing] His resurrection [by a new life lived for God].
