My spiritual director from many years ago, who is now deceased, used to say to me,

Wherever you go, lift people up. Even if you’re low, raise them up with a smile, a warm comment, an interested response. Although joy can’t be chosen, cheerfulness can.

He had that spirit, a spirit very much like that of the great Saint of Cheer, Philip Neri, who said,

Cheerfulness strengthens the heart and makes us persevere in a good life. Therefore the servant of God ought always to be in good spirits.

Or, as the joyful Teresa of Calcutta would say it,

Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.

So as you go, be of good cheer. If not for yourself, for others, out of love.
