Saved by Hope

“Could a body broken and blood spilled two thousand years ago restore my own damaged life?” ― Frederica Mathewes-Green

I thought of this quote after I heard the story (told publicly) of an Afghan/Iraq war vet who went through a Christ Renews His Parish retreat this last summer. At the end of the weekend he said, referring to treatments he had received over several years for PTSD,

What the U.S. Military tried to do for me by spending nearly $500,000 on treatments, Jesus achieved in a weekend. I mean, the treatments did good for me, but Jesus gave me something they couldn’t: hope. I realized when you have Jesus, you can bear anything cuz He’s already been there, done that. Now I really get this passage: “…for we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.” — Hebrews 4:15-16
