Greek Prayer

In honor of the Cappadocian Fathers, Basil and Gregory (whose feast was celebrated last week), here is a lovely Greek hymn called Axion Estin, ‘It is Truly Meet,’ which is followed by the Orthodox Kyrie (that I recall with great fondness from my Dad’s church). The words of the hymn are, in English,

It is truly meet [right] to bless thee, O Theotokos,
ever blessed, and most pure, and the Mother of our God.
More honorable than the cherubim,
and beyond compare more glorious than the seraphim.
Without corruption thou gavest birth to God the Word.
True Theotokos, we magnify thee.
